Planning a family stay in Alassio in August? The middle of the month is unlike any other time of year, and knowing what actually happens around Ferragosto makes a noticeable difference to your plans. Rather than vague advice about a “lively atmosphere”, here is what you can realistically expect, what usually stays open, and how to organise your days during the busiest week on the Italian Riviera.
1. Ferragosto is the centre of the month
Ferragosto, the Feast of the Assumption on 15 August, shapes the entire month. In 2026 it falls on a Saturday, making an already busy holiday even more concentrated. Around the two weeks surrounding the holiday, roughly 20 million Italians travel from cities towards the coast and the mountains. Whilst northern cities such as Genova can fall to around 40% of their normal population, Alassio experiences the opposite. The seafront fills, the evening passeggiata (the traditional evening walk) becomes especially busy, and 15 August is typically the single busiest day of the year.
2. The Ferragosto fireworks are a local tradition
One of the best-known traditions is the Ferragosto piromusicale, a firework-and-music display staged from the Molo Bestoso, also known as Pontile Bestoso. It is typically presented around 22:30–23:00 on 15 August and is described as a low-acoustic-impact display. If poor weather intervenes, the event is normally postponed until the following evening. Arriving early for an evening stroll along the lungomare (the seafront promenade) gives you the widest choice of viewing spots.
3. Expect selective closures rather than a shutdown
Visitors sometimes assume everything closes during Ferragosto, but that is not how a resort town functions. Family-run businesses serving residential neighbourhoods or inland communities often take a week of ferie between roughly 10 and 20 August. In contrast, beach restaurants, bagni (beach clubs), gelaterie and pizzerie that depend on summer visitors generally remain open throughout their busiest trading period. The exception is 15 August itself, when even some tourist-facing kitchens pause at lunchtime before reopening later in the day.
4. The beach is at its fullest
Alassio’s Baia del Sole stretches for more than three kilometres and includes roughly 100 bagni, yet this is still the period when demand is highest. Walk-in availability for loungers becomes much more limited than earlier in the summer. If beach time is an important part of your holiday, arranging your preferred beach club before arrival is one of the simplest ways to avoid unnecessary last-minute searching.
5. Plan your day around the August weather
According to ARPA Liguria climate normals, August brings average daytime highs of around 25.3°C, whilst the sea averages about 24.2°C. It is also the warmest and most humid stretch of the year. Many families find early mornings ideal for the beach or exploring, then return later for an aperitivo (pre-dinner drinks and light bites) as the scent of sea salt mixes with warm pine and jasmine in the evening air.
6. Ferragosto week offers more than the beach
The holiday period is usually accompanied by a broader programme of recurring events. Open-air concerts under the Musica sotto le stelle and Alassio sotto le stelle series are established traditions, as are AperiLibro literary evenings. Nearby, the hill frazione of Moglio is known for the Gnoccata di Moglio, a long-running food sagra celebrating potato gnocchi. Exact yearly schedules vary, so it is worth checking the programme shortly before you arrive rather than assuming every event will take place on the same dates each year.
7. A little advance planning goes a long way
Restaurant reservations become much more valuable during this period than at other times of the summer. Booking by telephone a day or two ahead is often enough, and confirming opening arrangements during the week before arrival is sensible because ferie dates differ between individual businesses. If your plans include the fireworks evening, reserve dinner well in advance so you can enjoy the evening without rushing between venues.
8. Quick practical tips
Come to the beach early if you prefer a quieter start to the day. Book your fireworks-night dinner before 15 August arrives. Expect the A10 motorway and coastal rail services to be particularly busy on Ferragosto itself. If your travel dates are flexible, the period from around 20 August onwards is usually calmer whilst still offering warm sea temperatures and an active resort atmosphere.
