Discover Alassio on the Italian Riviera

A sandy bay, a medieval town and green hills behind it. Our guide to Alassio: the beach, the town, where to eat, what to see nearby and when to come.

View over the Bay of Alassio on the Italian Riviera

Alassio lies on the Riviera di Ponente, the western half of the Ligurian coast, between Genoa and the French border. It is a real town rather than a resort: a long sandy bay, a medieval centre of narrow streets, and green hills rising straight behind it. This guide brings together everything we have written about Alassio, from the beach and the old town to where to eat and when to come.

The beach

The Baia del Sole is Alassio’s reason for being: more than three kilometres of fine sand in a sheltered bay, with a Blue Flag for water quality in most years. More than a hundred bagni, the private beach clubs, line the shore, with free public stretches in between. In July and August it pays to arrive early; in June and September there is room for everyone.

The town

Behind the seafront runs the Budello, the narrow main street of the old town, lined with shops, bakeries and cafés. Close by is the Muretto, the famous wall of ceramic tiles signed by artists and celebrities who passed through Alassio. In the evening the whole town comes out for the passeggiata, the evening walk along the lungomare, usually preceded by aperitivo.

Food and wine

Ligurian cooking is simple and seasonal: focaccia, pesto made with basil from the coast, taggiasca olives, anchovies and the fish of the day. The local white wines, Pigato and Vermentino, are made on steep terraced vineyards just inland. Eat out in town, find a trattoria in the hills, or cook for yourselves with what you find at the market.

Around Alassio

Alassio makes an easy base for the rest of Liguria. Laigueglia is a few minutes along the coast, Albenga with its medieval towers about a quarter of an hour. Inland are hill villages such as Zuccarello and Castelvecchio di Rocca Barbena. Further afield, Sanremo, Genoa and Menton across the French border are all day trips. Just offshore lies Gallinara, a small island nature reserve.

When to come

Every season has its own character. May and June are green and fresh, with the sea warming up. July and August are hot, lively and busy, with Ferragosto on 15 August at the centre. September and early October keep the warm sea but lose the crowds. Winter is quiet and local, with mild days by the sea.

Getting here

The nearest airports are Genoa, about one hour by car, and Nice, about 1 hour 15 to 1 hour 30. Alassio also has its own station on the coastal railway between Genoa and Ventimiglia. A hire car gives you the most freedom to explore the coast and the hills.

Where to stay

Villa Belvedere del Condor is a fully detached villa in the hills above Alassio, about 12 minutes by car from the beach and the centre. It sleeps eight guests in four suites, each with its own bathroom, and has a private 12-metre pool with pool house, a dining terrace for eight with views over the bay, and private parking for four cars. Stays run from Saturday to Saturday.

The villa also hosts small executive retreats; see Retreats and why a private villa works for a leadership team.
